Some good old-fashioned glam rock, a sublime Malian singer-musician and a musical emceed by the Cat in the Hat top our list of cool stuff to do in the Bay Area. 1 The Struts: As the story goes, Luke Spiller, the singer and frontman of this British band, grew up in a strict, religious household in suburban England, discovered Michael Jackson at an early age and began practicing song and dance moves in his bedroom to prepare for the pop stardom he believed was his destiny. Anyone who saw The Struts at BottleRock Napa in May knows that rehearsing paid off. Spiller works a stage like a cross between Mick Jagger and Freddie Mercury, and his band serves up a wonderfully retro brand of glam-rock. The Struts are headed back to the Bay Area next week, and you have a couple of chances to catch their infectious show.

Unfortunately, Cleve — who led the overture seated on a tall stool — didn’t conduct the entire program. He ceded the four successive works to his assistant conductor, Florin Parvulescu, whose cautious, rather dutiful podium style never quite summoned the same kind of interpretive fire. Parvulescu’s best work came in the two arias, which began with “Non piu di fiore,” from the opera “La Clemenza di Tito.” Soprano Christine Major, a former resident artist with Opera San Jose, has a large, rich-toned voice, and she sang the aria expressively; Natalie Parker contributed a plangent basset horn solo. The concert aria “Nehmt meinen Dank” followed, with Parvulescu introducing Mozart’s amorous music in gentle waves and Major delivering the vocal part in sweet, articulate phrases.
