The program started in 2007, when Montalvo launched a pilot partnership with Downtown College Prep in San Jose to work with teachers and students to design and implement lesson plans using dance, painting, music, poetry, visual and the culinary arts to teach science, reading comprehension and math. It ran successfully for three years. In 2011-12, Montalvo initiated a similar pilot program at San Jose Unified’s Shallenberger Elementary School.
